Storytelling as healing art?

When and how has fiction helped you heal?
I'm looking for your stories about the ways in which fiction has helped you navigate through difficult times.
I'm specifically *not* looking for experiences with explicitly inspirational-type fiction or parables.
Maybe a fictional character has resonated with you. Maybe an exchange of dialogue has stayed with you, and comforted you. Or maybe a writer's peculiar way of looking at the world has helped you put things into perspective.
Escapism aside, can literary fiction help people who are stressed/miserable/suffering? If so, how did it help you?
