Monitor hot-tub temperature while away? any solutions beyond upgrading my system?

I have a old hot tub that sometimes malfunctions - I think it would be very useful to have some kind of remote monitoring device to see the current water temperature.

I know there are systems out there for this but they are a significant upgrade $$$ to buy / install.

Perhaps is there a way to get a waterproof thermometer that has WiFi-connecting properties ect?

How about using a regular old digital thermometer and just watch it with a wifi enabled camera. It may not send you alerts but you could check in on it periodically and it would be cheap and easy to implement.

Look into weather station equipment.

You could make a monitoring/alerting system with this sensor, an arduino, and a computer with a basic script to tweet/email status information.

If you already have a computer you can use, it should cost <$50. You could use a Raspberry Pi with an ethernet dongle, which would push the cost closer to $125.

This tutorial should get you most of the way there.
