Why does iPad stop sending video to AppleTV when it auto-locks?

Apple TV + iPad troubleshooting: Suddenly, my iPad has stopped sending video to my Apple TV when it is in "lock" mode (or sleep or standby mode or whatever it's called). As recently as two days ago, this did not happen. Does anyone know how to fix this?

This does not happen with music, only video. Also, my iPhone does keep sending video to the Apple TV even when it is locked -- the problem occurs only when the iPad is controlling the Apple TV. Both the iPhone and iPad are running iOS 6.0.1, and the Apple TV is fully updated. As far as I remember, I have not installed any updates recently. I have tried resetting the iPad and the Apple TV, and that has not fixed the problem.

Obviously, I could work around the problem by turning off auto-lock on the iPad, but I'd rather not have to do that. Thanks for any suggestions.

Is the AppleTV working normally on it's own? Apparently the latest software update is bricking some units.
