Bands that sound like or inspired by Booker T and the MGs

I love Booker T and the MGs and that fusion of synthesizer as the lead vocalist in a funk band... are there any modern bands replicating this style?

Or even older bands I should check out that match the style?

(bonus points if any other made a Christmas album nearly as badass as Booker T and the MG's "In the Christmas Spirit")

May be a little too out there for what you're looking for, but give Praxis a try.

Definitely The Meters, especially the earlier albums. And more recently, The Diplomats of Solid Sound.

The James Taylor Quartet and not as similar but check out Herbie Mann's 'Live at the Whiskey A Go Go'.

This band, doing a cover of Lauryn Hill's Everything is Everything? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASHV-Vt4eCM&feature=related

Not sure if I like that live version better, or this studio version:
