Should I send a cover letter with this fax?

Should I send a cover letter with this faxed hard copy job application that's due today, and if so, where can I find good, quick instructions on how to do so? The special details -- I originally filled out an application through an online system but it was inactivated as of two days ago. Online system didn't require resume or cover letter, and the application is very structured in what it asks for. Do I try to save HR & myself some time by skipping a cover letter, or do I make the extra effort to type something out in the next hour?

Response by poster: It also says "Please do not submit a resume unless requested." But what about a cover letter? Ack.

Best answer: If it specifically tells you not to send a resume, that indicates they only want the results from the application. I can't imagine any place saying they don't want a resume wanting a cover letter. I think you're better off not sending one.

I would add that, if they request a resume from you, as their message indicates they might, then you should probably include a cover letter as well (assuming they don't mention cover letters one way or the other).

I don't know if this is overly pedantic, but are you referring to a FAX cover letter (example) or a resume cover letter (example)?

You almost certainly want to include a fax cover letter anytime you are faxing. You will want to include a note regarding your name/application number and to whom the fax should be directed.
