I'm looking for stylish black satchel bags, preferably made of canvas, for men. Budget: $300.

What size are you picturing?

Does "slate grey" count? It looks like weathered black to me. J Crew has some nice canvas satchels (that look like Filson knock-offs and I would recommend Filson except they don't come in black).

Or you could contact the Archival Clothing folks - their small field bag comes in black but their large does not...however, I imagine that you could work something out since they make the bags themselves.

Big enough for a lap top and a book or two.

Yes, and that bag looks great but it's too expensive.

?? Both of the bags in that comment were below $300 (the one you're talking about is less than $100), as were the other 2 that Frowner referred to but didn't link to.

I love my Courierware bag.

You might also want to look around on Ebay - that's where I get my bags and you can probably find something used that will be a lot cheaper.

There's this nice new J Crew oilcloth messenger bag - I got a used one in a different color and I like it quite well. It is floppy and not structured, so I would not use it for super-heavy carrying over long distances every single day, but it will definitely fit both a laptop and a couple of small books. (Not, like, a couple of textbooks, right? I don't think you could do both a laptop and two medical/econ/bio monsters.)

Moops messengers, waxed canvas, <$300. A comment in another thread here turned me on to Moops and I am really happy with mine.

Response by poster: brainmouse, you're absolutely right. Turns out that the currency on the ABINGDON LAPTOP BAG page was set to SEK and not USD, i.e. it costs 882 SEK.

Moop bags are marvelously well made.

Seconding Courierware as well. I have a bag of theirs I've been using for more than 15 years and it is good as new except for the giant purple pen streak I got on it.

Manhattan Portage are nice, too, if you don't mind the giant logo patch. (I do, which is why I don't have one.)
