Name our New Dog!! We just got a foster dog that we'll probably be keeping. Beautiful black lab. He might be a future Search and Rescue dog, or he may just be a family pet. Pictures inside!

This beautiful 9 month old black Lab is Beau or Bo, but we have kids who hear "no" a lot. We're thinking that might get confusing for the poor guy, so we want a new name.

Being the Harry Potter geek that I am I voted for Sirius, but my husband didn't like it.

Mr. Shoes like Max, but there are currently about 18 other Maxes at the dog park. Something equally simple would be best. Jack is a possibility.

I've heard that two syllables and hard sounds are good for dog names. Any ideas?

We have a German Shepherd named Leela, any name for the black dog needs to be different enough that he can distinguish between the two.

(Just for clarification, the black dog is Mr. Shoes dog. I'm posting on his behalf.)

The two syllable and hard consonant guidelines are nonsense from the New Skete monks. Pay that no mind, and find a name your ((handsome) dog responds to naturally and use positive rewards to reinforce it.

There was a rotweiler named Bo across the street from the house I just moved out of, and my new house has a great pyrenees named Bowie living across from us. They were both great dogs!

So I suggest modifying to Bowie.

I really like naming pets after something that means something to you (and your family). We named our rescue Helo because we are such big BSG fans. So I would personally push for Sirius, or any other literary/film/TV name.

Also remember that any name you give your dog will ultimately morph into a nickname that may or may not be close to the actual name. "Helo" became "Helo Monster" (a play on gila monster) and we regularly call him "Monster," particularly when he crawls under the bed because it's endlessly amusing to say "There's a Monster under my bed!"

As good as names like Jake, Sam and Max are, unfortunately they're also pretty common for both kids and dogs, so I'd have to recommend against them (ditto Molly, if he was a girl.)

Otis, Cooper and Angus are good: strong names you could yell and he'd clearly know you mean him, which might be important in a search-and-rescue career.

My dog's name is Sully, or if he's in trouble Sullivan O'Reilly. He's an Irish breed, so it fits. I named him after Paul Newman's character in Nobody's Fool, but if kids ask I named him after the big blue monster in Monsters, Inc.

I've never met another dog named Sully.

My friend had a black lab named Cooper. It was a good name for calling the dog, because it could be shortened to, "Coop!"
