Suggest Brazilian positive hip hop artists

Please suggest Brazilian hip hop/rap artists for me to check out that have a very positive/happy vibe rather than a gangster-y, macho-y sounding delivery. I don’t speak Portuguese, but love the sounds of the Brazilian accent (no English please), combined with fluid lyrical delivery. Actually, if you know any Portuguese artists, I’ll take those too. Thanks

You might like Gabriel O Pensador and Criolo Doido--both have a very "Brazilian" style of rap with a heavy influx of samba and jazz/funk.

She's not a rapper, but Céu (link) is my favorite Brazilian artist. Like you, I don't speak a word of Portuguese, but her voice is so good I'd listen to her singing the phone book.

Curumin?

Sorry I don't have a good song to point you to, I'm on my phone.

Not hip hop, but pretty upbeat - Bonde do Role

Criolo's album Nó na Orelha is fantastic (Guardian review). This song was huge last year: Não Existe Amor em SP.

This is a nice documentary by Vice about Criolo and his hip-hop community in São Paulo: Meet Criolo.

I also love Emicida, he totally reminds me of São Paulo's 90s hip-hop (but better), but might be too heavy for you? Check Triunfo.

Also rapper Lurdez da Luz is awesome. I'm in love with the song and the video for Andei.

(I notice in my recommendations a strong bias for São Paulo -- the rappers and even the songs are all about SP, and in two videos downtown SP is the setting. Must be homesick... Also I really don't follow the scene, since I'm not a fan of rap particularly. But asking a Brazilian for a recommendation for Brazilian music in general is like asking an American for a recommendation in American music, pretty much impossible without any qualifiers! There are literally hundreds of genres. You can listen to the cool podcast Caipirinha Appreciation Society to get to know some of the alternative/contemporary scene).

Oh, I think I misunderstood, you want any rap in Portuguese, not any Brazilian music, I guess. Buraka Som Sistema is great - if you like them, you can search for more kuduro, which is related to baile funk.

Response by poster: Wow! I'm loving this...

Gabriel O Pensador is exactly what I'm looking for, and the sound of Marcelo D2/Seu Jorge is amazing.

Will be looking further into Rappin' hood, BNegão and Lurdez da Luz - those three really tickled my brain.

Also, not what I was looking for, but Céu's stuff is beautiful!

Thanks everyone....

You're familiar with Os Mutantes, right? They're not hip hop (more like psychedelic rock from the 60's), but if you enjoy Brazilian music you can't go wrong there.

Response by poster: Hip hop/rap with a positive/happy vibe seems to belong to a genre called "hippy hop".
