Readings on changes of power?

Can you recommend books/articles about the dynamics of political power transitions?

I'd like to better understand the dynamics of "planned"/scheduled transitions of political power (eg elections, inaugurations, successions, &c, as opposed to revolutions). Specifically, I'd like a deeper understanding of what distinguishes changes of government that proceed freely & smoothly from those that become catastrophic/unstable. Where should I start?

When you say 'those that become catastrophic/unstable' do you mean that the change of government is handled catastrophically badly (e.g. at an administrative level), or more that the new regime takes the country into catastrophic/unstable conditions (war, dictatorship etc) during their term in office? Did you have any specific examples in mind when writing this question?
