Disk recovery software - MAC os 9.1?

Does anyone know of any (preferably freeware) programs for Mac OS 9.1 that can fix disk errors?

My father has an original iMac. It has started to behave a little strangely - not always starting up, email account details vanishing etc. Upon examination, the hard disk is reported to have errors by Norton Systemworks, which it cannot fix. Is there anything similar to Onyx for Mac 9.1 that might work?

Onyx doesn't do disk repairs. It's major repair features are running Cron cleanups , Disk prebinding optimization and permission fix.

Apple's Disk Utility should run and try to repair if you ahve a crash.

Make sure you rebuild the desktop...adn probably the best basic util is Disk warrior. If Norton is having problems, try booting from the Norton Disk. And there are problems that can't be fixed.
