Need help identify bird tweet

Can you identify what bird is making this tweet? [MP3 audio]

We live in a suburban area of Orange County, CA, and the tweeting begins around 10pm and is continuous all the way through the early morning, maybe 2am or later.

At first, we were a little annoyed at how monotonous and repetitive it was. Now, we're a little sad for the little guy, since no other bird seems to answer its call. Perhaps its buddies are all asleep?

Sounds a bit like a bobwhite, Colinus virginianus, but you're in California, so maybe another quail.

rtha will know, I am sure.

I suck at passerines and am even worse at birding by ear unless it's a raptor call.

But! As far as I know, quail don't call at night, and not all night. My knowledge may be flawed or incomplete.

I'll listen again and give it some thought and poke around on bird sites, though, and I'll come back if I find anything useful.

At that time of the night, possibly a nightjar? I only know about the eastern varieties, though. The whip-poor-will's here easily can go all night long.

Best answer: It sounds much like a coqui, but what one would be doing in your area is a mystery.

Response by poster: Thanks everyone and thank you, cat_link! Though finding out there's a non-native restricted pest in the neighborhood, that's been surviving our recent 90+ degree temperature and can live for months with no food or water is a bit worrying. Now I'm hoping it never finds friends.
