London 2012: What did you make of it?

As a stereotypically cynical Brit, I have my own opinions about the Olympics; the opening and closing ceremonies; the positive experiences most Olympians seem to have had, and the general sense of pride that has developed in the UK throughout... but I'd love to know what you think, especially non-Brits. Has London 2012 changed your views about Britain, for better or worse? What did you make of that closing ceremony?

Based completely on personal experience (and twitter response) it seems like:

- Everyone thought the London Olympics was one of the better they have witnessed
- That the opening ceremony was pretty amazing and set the bar for future events
- That the closing ceremony was incomprehensible and trashy in turns, and kind of tainted the whole games a bit

I would be fascinated to hear your opinions, whether you are British or not, living in London or elsewhere, an ex-patriot, or perhaps an actual visitor to the games.

(Please feel free to contradict everything I have said here.)

I did not follow the olympics, so they only crossed my radar when they made major news. My opinion of the UK was somewhat worsened as a result due to things like the ridiculous crackdown on non-official sponsors, the overly paranoid military security, and the terrible branding.
