What movie is this?!

Help me figure out exactly what movie I'm thinking about?
I don't remember much about it. I watched it years ago and all I recall is:
- It was definitely romance.
- A great part of it had to do with this girl (younger?) than the guy moving/being at his place (???). I want to say the girl was brown haired and the guy was blonde, but I really can't tell for sure.
- There was a scene about cooking/messing around with pots?
- Either the main love interest or his brother (or close) die at the 9/11. (this is what I'm most certain about, it ends with a very dramatic note to it...)
And that's all I can think of.
Help? It's driving me crazy.
