Who is Mrs Bear?

Can you identify this teddybear and tell me where I can buy another one like it?

This is a photograph of Mrs Bear. She is my four-year-old's beloved companion, but she's beginning to look ragged around the seams, she's been involved in a few fights, and I fear for her longevity. Therefore I would like to have an emergency Mrs Bear on hand in case the worst ever happens.

Mrs Bear was a present from friends; we believe she was originally bought in Belgium. She does have a tag on her leg, but it has been chewed to ribbons. The dress is original; there used to be a matching shoulderbag too. 'Mrs Bear' is our name for her.

Do you recognise this bear, do you know its manufacturer, do you know where I can get another? Ideally in Europe, but the love of a small child knows no distance.

About how big is Mrs. Bear?

My sister-in-law went through a similar situation when my niece was little, only she had a Mr. Bunny. We were able to find a Mr. Bunny Junior on eBay, but Mr. Bunny survives to this day.

The face and general shagginess of the bear makes me think of Steiff My link goes to the USA location, but I believe they're worldwide.

You may want to think through whether you really want to replace a child's stuffed animal. I guess it depends on how your child relates to the bear, but I would have been totally devastated if my parents thought they could just swap out one of my stuffed animals for another. Then again, I'm someone who has sent a childhood stuffed animal to a "teddy doctor" when my dog mauled it.

Would another option be to try to transition to another "everyday" stuffed animal and keep Mrs Bear on a shelf or somewhere accessible but less likely to get beat up?

Is the bear jointed? Are the arms and legs filled with a bean bag-type material, or are they all fill? Or are they more stiff, like a Steiff would be?

(Not a Steiff unless it has the button in the ear)

If you cannot find a duplicate, you might want to consider sending Mrs Bear away to the teddy bear hospital. I have used one in the US, and it was well worth it.

Response by poster: It's not Steiff. That was my first thought, but there was no button. And I have a very vague recollection of the label when it arrived, and it wasn't Steiff.

Mrs Bear is about a foot long, maybe slightly less. Her feet are filled with something bean-like, but the rest of her is softer fill. I'm not sure on the subject of joints--I'll check once the little darling is asleep.

From a friend: She kind of looks like a Boyds bear.

Mrs. Bear looks a lot like my daughter's Bun Bun to me, and the description of the beans/squishiness also sounds similar. Bun Bun is from Jellycat. However! I cannot find one with a dress/shoulderbag like Mrs. Bear. Still looking, but let me know if the name Jellycat rings a bell from the now-gone tag.

This Katie Kitten from Jellycat looks a lot like Mrs. Bear to me. Not finding any current product line with a bear with clothes though, and nothing on ebay, either.

Looks Jellycat-like to me, too - but don't Jellycat toys have a sewn in label (unless you're a label cutter-offer)?

photos of the face from a couple other angles, along with measurements, might help. you also might try a teddy-bear or toy collectors' forum. even if this type of teddy isn't particularly collectible, folks who are into bears will know what's on the market and what various brands' faces look like.

I think Tilde has it right-- my only qualm is that I've been googling for 20 minutes and haven't found that exact dress. Mrs. Bear has the classic look of a Boyds Bear. They come in different colors and fur textures. They are typically jointed at the hips and shoulders and have felt on the bottoms of their hands and feet. They weighted with (silicone?) beans.

I'm not so sure that it is a Boyds Bear. I used to collect them, and to me, the dress is too plain to be something from their line and if she came with a handbag she would have also come with a hat! Good luck in your search!

Jellycat stuffed toys seem to have a plastic nose and it looks like Mrs. Bear's nose is stitched with thread.
