History/Origin of Catholic School Girl Uniform

I thought this style of uniform was mostly American? At my (co-ed) Catholic school, we wore pretty much the standard UK school uniform (blazer, box-pleated skirt, jumper, shirt, and knee socks) and the single-sex Catholic schools were similar, but the kilts seem to be particularly an American thing.. So perhaps it's something that came from British school uniforms at some point? I'd be interested to see if this is the case!
