charity registration in Canada for dummies

how to register as a charity in canada?

canada-specific mostly! but also open to hearing other's experiences.

curious as to whether anyone has gone through the process of registering as a charity federally, via the CRA?

not looking for info regarding should we/shouldn't we -- more for people's actual experiences navigating the process of registering! it seems like such a daunting task, but with over 85,000 charities in canada, it *must* be doable.

bonus questions: what prompted you to register? how established were you already? any tips? anything you wish you'd known before you got started?

Only have experience with nonprofit, but I just finished fact-checking an article on Canadian charitable organizations. This is a good place to start, if you haven't looked at it already. This is the current CRA regulations on starting a charity in Canada (PDF). Also, you would do well to contact the folks over at Charity Intelligence Canada for advice.
