Why does my MSN Messenger for Mac 4.0.1 on my ibook keep signing me off every bloody five minutes? And are there any better IM programs I can use?

Check out Fire v1.5, which supports a number of IM protocols, including MSN.

Adium is a great (free!) multi-protocol app I use alongside iChat (for all the other services aside from AIM).

Also check out Adium. It supports MSN.

Adium kicks ass... and it's still in beta... I can't wait until it's a whole 1.01!

Another vote for Adium. Terribly customizable, too.
Also, you might want to check your connection. I used to have the same problem with a waivering wireless signal.

I prefer Proteus, although the developers are slow-ass, it does have a searchable history, which is a deal-breaker for me.

I use Adium for the multi-protocol goodness, but the MS client worked fine for me when I did use it so you may have a bigger problem.

bonaldi, Adium allows you to search your logged conversations, albeit only one contact at a time...

In case this pile-on wasn't thorough enough... I also use Adium.

Adium here, too. I use it for MSN, AOL (iChat), and Yahoo.

I sense a pattern here.

I like Adium but the current version is pretty buggy as it's undergoing a significant overhaul which has introduced some annoying problems. Fire works very well, though it has somewhat fewer features.

Adium uses slightly less memory than Fire, and just a shade more CPU time.

Try both and see which one you like.

Yes, Adium. It's lovely.
