Question: Where can I store luggage in San Francisco?

I'd like to spend some time in San Francisco on foot, without have to lug my suitcase around. The storage lockers at SFO have been taken out of service for security reasons. Is there somewhere else I can store a suitcase for a day?

According to this, there's a travel agency in the international terminal that can store luggage. I've never tried it myself, so you might want to call ahead.

Your hotel should have a bag check. Any reasonably nice hotel should.

I've had luck with the local Christian Science Reading Room in a few different cities. Their hours tend to be a little weird, though... Google pulls up phone numbers that would be worth calling and chatting up.

Thanks for the info, blue mustard. I just called them and they said that they do have luggage storage. Exactly what I was looking for.

piro, could you please explain what lead you to check with a Christian Science Reading Room for such service? What additional non-literary functions do the Reading Rooms fulfill? I'm not very familiar with Christian Science, or their establishments.

Maybe they'll hold a suitcase too? It's a pretty central location to get around town from, and easy to get to the airport from there.

Note that the airport is not exactly conveniently located -- it's a 30-minute drive from the city (if you're lucky).
True, but he said he wanted to spend the time on foot--and parking in the City would not be fun. The best bet would be to take bart into the city and then walk (or use MUNI to get out of the downtown area).

I had assumed he was starting in the city, not starting at the airport. But even if he were starting from the airport, if he wants to maximize his siteseeing time, cab or car from the airport is much preferable to BART. Regardless, parking in one place and walking around is just fine -- it's driving around from one place to another that's no fun.

Thanks to everyone for the info. My starting point is actually my brother's place in San Jose; I'm flying out of SFO. I thought I'd take the train up to SFO, drop off my luggage, and continue to San Francisco. (I've got friends in town, but it seems like kind of short notice to call them up; and San Jose doesn't seem to be that great for exploring on foot.)
