Airport configuration problem

I can't configure my Airport Extreme. I've been having trouble with my Airport Extreme holding a DSL connection - so attempted to change configuration but couldn't access it (says there was an error in reading configuration). I've reset the Airport (holding the reset button for five seconds) and can see the airport with the Apple assigned name. I use the password "public" but still get the same error message. Can't get at the configuration page with either the airport setup or Airport utility software.

I have an Airport express that still works fine. Do I have a Hardware problem or is there another way to set the Extreme back to factory defauts?

1. What computer are you using to configure the Airport Extreme base station?

2. Which of the two Ethernet ports on the Airport Extreme are you connecting to the computer?

I bet that your extreme is trying to be its own network rather than jumping onto your original airport express!!!

Go into the Application menu, go to airport... find the one that ISN'T your original airport express network (hopefully you renamed it)... click on it and in the 2nd tab it says something along the lines of "be a new network" or "join existing network"... and you want to join the existing network.

keep on resetting it with a paper clip... they are a pain in the butt to reset, I'll tell you.

You didn't mention how you were connecting the the Airport, but initial setup is easier if the computer you're using to set it up is physically plugged into the network, especially if you have an existing wireless network.

Response by poster: Using a Powerbook g4 and connecting to the Airport Extreme via wi fi. As is, the airport extreme is able to connect to the DSL and internet but I want to change its name etc and Upgrade it to the recent 4.2 software. Can't do any of that

Best answer: Configuring the base station over wifi is tricky and unreliable. Connect the PB to base station with an Ethernet cable. You'll want to use the LAN connection on the base station (< •••>).

It sounds to me like you've got them disagreeing about addresses in some manner. Check that they're both not at the same static IP, and check that they're not both configured to act as DHCP servers.

Rothko's right:
See if they new one works just attached to one computer (most of the interfaces don't care about cross cables anymore, so typically you can just connect a cable of any type between newer machines and an airport).
