Friday Night Be Dammed

AMSTERDAM: I'm flying to the dam tonight, meeting with 4 friends sometime around midnight. Can anyone recommend a good club or bar for 5 guys in their thirties to hit later?... and any other places to go over the weekend? (we're not interested in the touristy side, we have all done that in our twenties). Thanks

oh yeah, and anyone know roughly how much a taxi from the airport to the centre might cost?

Amsterdam is about the easiest airport in the world to get to by public transport. Trains to amsterdam central are cheap, frequent and reliable, the station is just outside the airport and well sign posted. See here for details. IIRC you may even have to go through the station to get to the taxi rank.

The Winston is rather fine on a Sunday night.
IIRC, a taxi from the airport to Centraal is around €25-€30. The regular airport shuttle train is quick (about 15 min), easy and costs about €4.

As for clubs I have always loved the Melkweg (Milky Way) and Paradiso whose genres run the gamut, both located a stone's throw off Leidseplein. Except... they both seem to be booked over the entire weekend for 5 Days Off. Hmm.

Well, as for bars and pubs go there's enough fun to be had in and around Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein squares. Tram lines 1, 2, 5, 6, 7 and 10 all go through Leidseplein. Maybe you'll like Boom Chicago, a bunch of American improv comedians who basically came to Amsterdam to visit and just never left - they opened up shop at the Leidseplein Theater and provide great improvised comedy as well as food & drink.

I'm with biffa, take a train. Oh and just a local quirk: the ticket vending machines come in two flavours, the tall yellow kind with push buttons and the slightly smaller yellow and blue ones with touch screens. Use the ones with touch screens - they do English.

Hope this helps - have fun!

Hell yeah, it looks like you're going to be there smack dab in the middle of a music festival.

I'm officially jealous.

try post cs - next to the central station - is a nice all in one. a cafe, museum and club. you might want to visit the 'vondelpark' to chill and lunch at 'the blue teahouse'.
other stuff:
- fleamarket at 'vondelplein' is fun
- atheneaum is a great bookstore at the end on the 'nieuwezijdse voorburgwal'
- yamyam (or jamjam?) is a real nice italian restaurant
- interested in architecture; make a trip to rotterdam 45 min by train
have fun! feel free to mail if you like more specific information!
