It's easy to be green

iPhone filter: Dad and I are on the same Verizon plan each with identical iPhone 4Ss (that was clumsy) purchased at the same time ... but our texts to one another are green, not blue. Now that I think of it, I think most of the texts of mine that should be blue are green.

That about sums it up. I don't know for certain which of my other friends/family have iOS5 or a 3GS or 4 or 4s. I do know what my dad has because we changed to Verizon on the same plan when we got our 4Ss together.

As I was typing this question, I realized I haven't seen a blue iMessage in months - so it must be me. What have I done? What can I do?

Best answer: It is possible to turn iMessage off in Settings->Messages. Did that somehow happen?

Make sure the Settings > Messages shows iMessage is on and "send as SMS" is off.

Also, the one time this happened to me, a reboot fixed it right up.

Best answer: Settings -> Messages -> Receive At

Is your phone number listed there? If not, add it.

You need iOS 5.0, 5.0.1 or 5.1 to use iMessage. If you're still using some variant of iOS 4.x you won't get iMessage (and you'll still be paying the wireless companies for all your text messages).

it's also worth noting that you need to have data (either Verizon data or WiFi) to send iMessages. this shouldn't be that much of a concern - Verizon usually has pretty good coverage - but if you don't at least see the little "I'm in a really slow data zone!" circle icon next to the Verizon text, your message will go out via SMS.

additionally, you can turn cell data totally off (but still be able to receive calls). that's a setting under General -> Network. there's also a setting in there for disabling data while roaming too.

It's not the color that's important, but rather what the color indicates.

Best answer: I had this happen with a friend, where her iPhone would only send mine SMS instead of iMessage.
She fixed it by turning off iMessage, deleting any old message threads with me, turning on iMessage again, then using not the saved contact, but an actually typed in phone number to send the message. Once it had sent the first message, it then recognized that both phones were iPhones, and that the number matched a contact, and it worked like it should.

No sure if that will fix yours, but it did hers.
