Question: Title for a 70s romance flick?

On behalf of a coworker, I have another "help me remember" question. This one involves a film from the early seventies.

My coworker saw the film in the early seventies on Broadway in New York, so I'm guessing it was a US film with some sort of wide release (not sure how the movie industry worked back then). The plot concerned a black couple in their late forties or early fifties who met at the end of a summer and fell in love. The woman developed cancer and hid her diagnosis from her lover. At the end of the film she dies. The title may have been something like "A Summer to Remember" and apparently it was quite a tear jerker.

This has defied all of my IMDB digging skills. Does it spark a memory for anybody?

Sounds like Sweet November to me, which originally came out in 1968... but the stars are not African American.
