Looking for statistics on how long visitors will spend looking for information on a website

I'm looking for statistics about how long the average website visitor will search a website for a particular bit of information before giving up and trying elsewhere.

I'm sure that I have read somewhere about studies where the experimenters give a bunch of users a fact to find out (like the date of a particular battle, or the phone number for a company) and then record how they go about doing it. I can't find the article I'm thinking of - can anybody offer any pointers?

Jakob Nielsen's Alertbox site is a great source for this type of information. Here's one of his articles: How Long Do Users Stay on Web Pages?
