How much does teaching ability count?

So far, it has seemed a lot of people get by on grant money and bullshit. I'm disillusioned by academia and the compromises it makes that everyone seems to accept.
Shouldn't the skill of teaching count for anything? In the translation or outcome?

This post was deleted for the following reason: This is a little all-over-the-place without a super clear answerable question. Maybe whittle it down to something a little more workable and give it another shot next week. -- cortex

Count for what? I assume you're talking about tenure track positions? Do you want to know about Hiring? Promotion? Tenure? Other Academic stuff?

Response by poster: Typos, typos. Question the frame of mind and the broken m key that asked this question.

I have a problem, a fundamental problem: I'm a preacher. I just don't lie. I fudge. I hyperbolize. But I never quite lie.

If your research is a biased piece of shit, I have a hard time not mentioning it. because I'm easily distracted and bored.

Response by poster: Not really. It seems frighteningly easy to break into. Tenure track, well. if I had a research goal I suppose.

I think we need more details (stated clearly). A lot of institutions want researchers and frankly do not care all that much about teaching abilities.

Response by poster: I think good teachers should matter more fro an "institute of higher learning". I'm hard on professors. And they are asking for it.

Teaching counts more at undergraduate-only, teaching-focused institutions and less at research institutions. Different institutions are different, though.

Response by poster: Can you note any that do? Focus on teaching over grant money and research?

Any undergraduate-only institution. The famous east-coast and midwest liberal art schools. Engineering schools like Olin or Harvey Mudd.
