iOS Heart Rate Monitor..

I have a question about my Scosche myTREK heart rate monitor for my iPhone.
I have a Scosche myTREK heart monitor. It appears to work with the Scosche iPhone software and it also works with a similar application called Digifit.
I would like to do some mobile software development that would involve talking to this device. I suspect that I should go out and get some sort of ANT+ device, as these seem to be, I guess, more sort of open?
But I thought I would ask... I mean, obviously the Digifit application talks to the myTrek somehow - maybe they licensed support? I can find no indication that this is an open standard or that I could develop for it, but maybe I'm not seeing something?
Maybe somebody knows more about this than I do.
