How can I become more efficient in finding a relevant literary agents for my book?

After six months of intense writing, I completed and edited a manuscript to (what I hope is) my first novel. The book is about three generations of Indian and Indian-American women and their relationship with each other. I started out trying to find agents through agentquery.com, but found that most of the search results turned up people who didn't seem to fit the right criteria to get my book out there.
Following the advice of a few blogs and a few editor friends, I then went to the NYPL website and searched for books that fall under subject titles in which I could classify my book. After searching through the acknowledgement sections of 30+ books (including books I own that are similar in subject as mine), I ended up only finding 2 agents, one of whom died a year ago.
All told, I haven't gotten a single positive response from any agents. Of course this could mean my book is shit, though I have a well-read, diverse set of friends who have/are reading my book, and so far I have gotten really positive reviews from them.
I know that finding the right agent is a process and will take time, but I have a sinking suspicion that I am going about this in the wrong way. Work is crazy busy, so I can't realistically commit more than a few hours a week to finding someone, therefore making this as efficient as possible is ideal.
MeFites, any suggestions on how to improve my search tactics?
