Trying to find a short story about love and loss, titled "Red."

[StoryFilter] I'm looking for a printed or electronic copy of the full text of a story titled simply "Red."

It may English, German, American - I'm not sure. It was set in the late 19th century, but I do not know when it was written. As best as I can reconstruct it, the content of the story involves two men, I think business partners, doing typical imperialist business in Polynesia or some other tropical island area.

One man falls deeply in love with one islander girl, but must leave due to business constraints. The other man, his partner, also falls in love, but schemes to keep the first man from returning to the island to claim his girl. Man #2 keeps Man #1 from returning for 30 years. When Man #1, finally returns, and shows up to #2's palace to confront him and see the woman he fell in love with, it turns out he walked right past her and did not recognize her.

Any information the Hive Mind can provide as to the author, or where to find a copy, would be incredibly helpful. Thank you.

Best answer: It's by William Somerset Maugham, full story here. You, um, are misremembering who didn't recognize whom, though. :)
