Was ist in München kühl? Is there anything worth doing near the Munich airport in about four hours?

I just realized I have nearly a six hour layover in Munich en route from Athens to DC on Thursday. Is there anything you'd recommend worth doing in the vicinity of a four hour window? I usually go via Amsterdam and I never have a problem catching the train from the airport into the city. I tend not to be a worry-wart when it comes to the travel schedule, so don't fear recommending something that would require me to travel away from the airport. Anyhow, I haven't been to the city since I was a kid, and I wouldn't mind catching a train to see something cool or even get a good bite to eat. Unfortunately, it seems like the Hauptbahnhof is forty minutes away via the S-Bahn. I'd say that's pushing it, leaving me with little left to actually do/see/eat anything. Anything closer?

You're right that Munich airport is a bit of a drag out of the city. It's quite a dull journey on one of those trains that stops every five minutes. You should also be aware that security at Munich can be quite slow (though not been through for a couple of years). There's an exhibition at the airport so you can learn about the new high speed mag-lev train they're building which may mean you can do something more interesting if you come back in a few years.
If you do decide to go into Munich can I suggest you get off the S-Bahn at Marienplatz, this puts you in the old town and will enable you to get a quick flavour of the town, maybe grab some German food at the Viktualien Markt and just have a wander through the older buildings/churches.
