Another exciting episode of Name-That-Band!

Identify-that-band-filter:

A few years ago I bought a cassette in a thrift store and I lost it when my car was stolen. Early 90s alternative, the band had a female singer and actually sounded a lot like Belly I thought. Kind of straight up rocking, bouncy alternative with with a slightly ethereal touch. I remember the case as being greenish in color and I think (but am not sure) the band was British and on one of the Warner labels. Also, I think they only put out one or two albums.

I've combed AMG and the Ectophiles Guide for any clues. Sorry I don't have any more details, but it is bugging the crap out of me that I can't remember... Thanks in advance.

Throwing Muses?

Do you mean that the paper insert was greenish in color, or that the case itself was greenish in color, like with Rykodisc? Do you remember anything else at all? Song titles? Chunks of lyrics?

Response by poster: Nope. Big Muses fan, would of remembered that. This band, alas, is more obscure. But thanks...

Response by poster: I meant the album cover/art/design was greenish. It wasn't that blue Ryko color like my old Sugar tapes from high school. As for other details, I just got nothing. I'm sorry. Thanks for trying.

I'm going to guess the band "Lush"

Response by poster: No, Sorry. This band is more obscure than that -- and probably earlier than Lush. Thanks though. This is beginning to feel like a fools errand. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Saint Etienne? They had a couple greenish albums.

Scrawl? American, but released two records on WEA (though have several on other labels). Started in the late 80s. Marcy Mays is a terrific singer. In the 90s they had one CD that was blue with clouds on it and another that was green (on Elektra).

Response by poster: Actually I guess Lush's first album came out in 90, but that was when they were way shoegazer. But this band did sound kind of like Lush after they went Britpop. I'm pretty sure this band is very early 90s, like '93 at the absolute latest, but probably earlier...

And good guess on St. Etienne, but they were more coventionally rocking. Also, I'm pretty sure this band dissapeared of the face of the earth in short order. My one other memory of this band was seeing them in the back of a Columbia House catalog in high school.

Also, it wasn't Pale Saints before anyone guesses that... Thanks for the help.

Response by poster: Not scrawl, though I had to check. Also, not Eve's Plum though that was a name I hadn't heard in a while.

I think this band is probably more obscure than I realized. Thanks for guessing.

I would guess Echobelly.

Likely not Echobelly, "On" was all black and orange, and 1995.

gnash, I was gonna guess echobelly as well but they don't have any green albums.

I just realized re: the green album w/ Echobelly.

You may want to try musicplasma? It may help you find Belly like bands.

His Name is Alive? Early 90's, ethereal singer, 4AD (not a British band, though).

I was gonna guess Velocity Girl but someone beat me to it. The Breeders seem way too obvious.
In any case even if it's not His Name is Alive, they're worth a listen; I'm partial to Stars on ESP, myself.

Response by poster: The Darling Buds! I knew Ask MeFi wouldn't let me down. Thank you so much... It's been bugging me for weeks. I'll try and track it down.

Thanks to everyone who guessed.

The Sugarcubes relaesed on green cassette.

I'll second/third/fourth Bettie Serveert.

Good golly thanks for a spectacular trip back through my collegiate/post collegiate musical scene. I need to check back in and see where all these little treasures ended up.

*digs up Velocity Girl CD*

And one to add: Veruca Salt?
