Trying to find out name of a 90s cartoon about a kid who in his daydreams would timetravel to south american civilizations

My memories are few, but vivid: this kid would fall asleep during history classes and find himself amongst some South American civilization, such as the Inca, Aztecs, Maya, etc. There may have been more to the story but I can't remember. He often had a dog with him, and I vaguely remember something about a chest in his attic with some magical artifact that I think enabled him to have these vivid dreams in the first place.

I used to watch this in the 90s on Israeli television, which often had cartoons from many countries so I'm not at all certain this is an American-made cartoon. Initially I was convinced this was on Israel's Channel One which tended to have educational-type shows, but now I'm less certain. Some cartoons shown were originally made in earlier decades so this can easily be something made in the 90s.

Intense googling (over an hour! I'm persistent) has yielded nothing, so AskMeFi ,you are my only hope! I have very fond memories of this show and would like to recover this gem.

It's called The Mysterious Cities of Gold.

I don't think there was any daydream aspect to the Mysterious Cities of Gold - rather, it was taking place in the "real world."

You might be thinking of Stanley, which featured a boy who would use his Great Big Book Of Everything to visit different lands and eras.

Response by poster: I'm pretty certain it isn't The Mysterious Cities of Gold, the animation style isn't right and the daydream/timetravel aspect I also remember pretty firmly. I can recognize anime when I see it, and I'm 98% certain this was a western cartoon.

Stanley also came too late, and uses a very different style.

The style of the show I'm thinking of is just generic enough that I can't place, though if I had to bet , I'm leaning slightly towards a French origin.

Thanks for the responses so far!

Best answer: Browsing through the list of shows here, I'm going to guess it's Las mil y una... Américas, aka A Thousand and One... Americas.
