Help me identify a favorite book from childhood.

I read this book in the late '70s but feel it was written in the early 60's. It's was a children's book but it had chapters. It was set on a beach in FL, I think, where the main character's parents owned a hotel made up of rental cottages. The main character was a boy around 10-11 years old. There were several different people renting the cottages - an older man (or woman) with a dog, and a couple who had two children, a boy and a girl. I remember the girl had long, very blonde hair. There was some kind of mystery that had to be solved - someone kidnapped the dog or something like that. The three children were trying to find clues and solve the case, and they finally got the rest of the renters involved. One clue they found was a note taped to a mirror in one of the cottages, and it had been written with a strange, twisted pencil that made the writing look illegible at first. The boy figured out how it had been written and went on to solve the case. The only other thing I remember is someone saying something about lady fingers (the dessert) around the girl, and she wasn't really listening and replied "Mama never lets us lick her fingers." So there's that. Any help you can provide would be great.

Best answer: This book is Carol Ryrie Brink's The Pink Motel. Brink was most famous (justifiably so) for Caddie Woodlawn, which I enjoyed, but I loved this book dearly.
