Valentine's ideas when traveling

I'm looking for Valentine's Days ideas for my girlfriend of 7 years. The complication is that we are traveling this year, leaving Feb 1.

After a poorly-received 30th birthday present at the start of the year, I'm looking for a special gift or idea for my girlfriend. The complication is that we will be on a boat (!) in Antarctica (!!) from Feb 4-16. We will also be with her father and another family member.

I'm not a fan of Valentine's Day celebrations for a few reasons, but normally cook special meal of her faves. In the past when we've been traveling on Feb 14, we've exchanged cards.

She has plenty of cold-weather gear. She recently got her first real camera and we've been outfitting it with hoods, filters, bags, cards, etc. I've been working with her explaining aperture, shutter, exposure, composition etc.

She likes the outdoors, is an avid kayaker, and isn't too much for frilly or fancy things. I'm looking at some local-made jewelry, and there may be something irresistible in Buenos Aires but I'd like to have that as a backup. Another thought was a photo-book after the event, but as a group we may be working on that.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

What's your budget?

A Kindle. It's small and will travel well. You could pre-load it with some books she'd be interested in (maybe some outdoorsy-type books).

Why don't you arrange some kind of experience for her that will be waiting for her in Buenos Aires? My S.O. did this for me while we were traveling in Arizona during my birthday, and it blew my mind. Specifically, she sneakily ordered a cake to pick up at a specific day and time at a bakery in Flagstaff. She pretended to want to stop briefly for coffee and emerged with a beautiful pastry. Just like magic!

Response by poster: Sassyfras: Have iPad already. Good idea.

Lieber Frau: EXCELLENT, that's a great idea and exactly the kind of suggestion I wanted.

Antarctica would be one hell of a unique place to propose...

Just kidding..unless you've already thought of that ;)

Is this a cruise? Any chance you can arrange an off boat excursion to the South Pole or one of the research stations? Unless you two are research scientists that will be their again, it seems like you have a once in a lifetime opportunity to do something truly unique for Valentine's Day. What else can you do in Antarctica, or back on shore at port, that you really can't do anywhere else? I'm think experiential gifts here, anything you can buy there I'm sure you can order online anytime you want it.

Just seconding sassyfras. If you can afford it, throw in a lighted cover so she can read at night. Also, tell her Ipad has a wonderful Kindle app (though obviously a shorter battery life than a Kindle.)

My Bear is getting a Kindle for Valentine's Day this year.

Does she have a GorillaPod yet? You can also buy knock-off ones on eBay for cheap, but they won't be as sturdy/durable.

You could wrap its legs around a card.
