Free trip to Seattle for on-site interview: what's there to do in downtown Seattle?

So I'm flying in from NYC, and I'm getting to Seattle at around 7:25 P.M. Thursday night, and leaving at 9:15 P.M. Friday night. I expect to be busy during early Friday afternoon, so I guess my only time to see the city is Thursday night.

What should I do? Are there any nice bars/lounges/cafes to go to in Downtown Seattle? Should I just walk by the water?

Dare I ask if anyone wants to talk or hang out Thursday night? I don't know anyone in Seattle, and I'm only staying for a day. Is there an more appropriate forum to make such requests?

I'm very excited, if you couldn't tell.

Right now ? Sledding. The whole city's socked in by three inches of snow. The steep hills here make snow disastrous for travel.

But seriously, go explore Pike Place Market (get a Starbucks at Starbucks #1, and a beer at Pike Place Brewery), ride the Monorail out to Seattle Center, and go up to the Space Needle observation deck.

Pure touristiness, all within blocks of downtown.

If you're looking for people to hang out with, check meetup.com. Meetup is very big in Seattle. There are hundreds of groups.

Also check the Stranger Suggests for events. Happy Hours and open mics are big.

Indeed it is likely to be slushy. Bring boots for walking.

Good luck with your interview!

Response by poster: Thanks, MoonOrb, for posting that link. I should've been more conscientious - alas, pure joy overtook me and I neglected to use the search queue. Thanks again though!

Good luck with interview!, I love this place. I'd walk around your hotel area a little, grab dinner at one of the downtown restaurants (the Palace Kitchen is particullarly warm and wonderful on a cold winter night) and have an excellent breakfast including coffee of course. Lola's, another downtown Tom Douglas restaurant, makes an awesome breakfast, and other less fancy downtown breakfast options abound, like Top Pot donuts.

Enjoy, and please land the job and return to us.

Get a drink at the Zig-Zag. It is a "bartender's bar" and is located downtown and has fantastic cocktails. Getting there 9ish on a Thursday shouldn't be too bad. Sit at the bar if at all possible.

Other options for beverages that are in the downtown vicinity:
-RN74. Kind of scene-y and spendy but they have an interesting cocktail menu and their food isn't half bad

-Spur Gastropub. I think Food and Wine or GQ or some similar magazine wrote up this place as one of the best bars of 2011.

-Local 360. Technically a restaurant, but great bar as well, open very late, very very casual and friendly, and I think the have a decent local beer program as well. Or, um, you know, tea and coffee and stuff.

Response by poster: Awesome, thanks for the extra replies, everyone! I'm going to enjoy myself Thursday night.

I will nail that interview, Bearwife. My general approach is to focus not on me, but on their needs and how I can help them meet the aforesaid.

Anyway, do you all expect the streets to still be slushy and generally difficult to walk tomorrow night and Friday? I'm hoping the streets will be clear by then.

Actually, here's to my flight not being canceled tomorrow =/.

Thanks again!

Just popped in to second/nth/whatever Zig-Zag. Tell Murray his San Francisco fan base says hello.

I don't think the sidewalks will be too bad tomorrow night around downtown. A lot will be shoveled and salted by the landlords or storefronts and there will be enough pedestrian traffic to keep it that way.

Definitely don't walk around in nice interview attire (dress shoes with no tread) though.

Sadly Murray retired at the end of last year, trip and a half. I'm sure the new guy is good though.

I went to Bathtub Gin & Co. the last time I was in Seattle and it was great. Cozy upstairs at the bar and a bit more spacious in the lounge on the lower level; the cocktails were definitely up to San Francisco fancy cocktail standards. Zig Zag is good too, but I was more impressed by Bathtub.

Last I heard, Murray was working at Canon.

brighteyes7, was your flight canceled? I heard the airport was shut down this morning due to the ice storm we're currently enjoying, but haven't heard about it being reopened...

Response by poster: Yes Palomar, it was, but corporate was kind enough to rebook me to virtually the same flight, except on a different airline.

I'm here, but i had to sit for 9 hours on the plane and got in late last night. I may not get a chance to see the city as much as I'd planned.

I guess if I want to see it again I should just nail the interview!

Response by poster: Nailed interview heh, couldn't have been better. Downtown Seattle is what's up, real estate-wise, retail-wise, people-wise.
