how do i fix my printer problem?

When I click add new printer, nothing happens, how do i fix this?

running windows xp SP1, and this is a really old parallel printer (not that it should matter)...after i click add printer in control panel, nothing happens. I dont know why (and yes i did try rebooting).

Service Pack 1? Better upgrade!

i'm updating to sp2 now. However, last time i checked windows should be able to add a printer even without service packs :-p . I know many people that havent installed it, I didn't want to install it either (it's concentrated evil), but i'm just hoping that there is a small chance this will magically fix the printer problem.
