Where can I get my cowboy on in Southern California?

After one vacation horseback trail ride in the Sonoran desert, I have decided that I am a cowboy.

Are there any places in Orange County, CA or nearby where I can have a similar experience of guided horseback riding in a wilderness area? Bonus points for a place that also offers lessons, and is family owned and operated by awesome people. Basically, I want the OC equivalent of Tucson's Houston's Horseback Riding.

Best answer: Head to the hills and go north to Griffith Park.

Best answer: Huntington Equestrian Center on Goldenwest St. in Huntington Beach has guided "trail ride" tours through the backside of their property. Orange Park Acres has several neighborhood equestrian groups including and ETI group. Modjeska, Silverado and Trabuco canyon also have groups that are similar to ETI, if they don't have actual ETI chapters.

Most if not all of of these clubs could put you in touch with someone with horses who are trained on trail rides (especially with new riders) and familiar enough with the terrain to give a pleasurable and safe riding experience.

Good luck and Happy Trails!
