They're sick of being told that it's by Phish. And sick of being asked to play it. But Gourds cover of Snoop Dogg's Gin & Juice is definitely unconventional.

The Cardigans covers of Iron Man and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath are great.

The Flashbulb's cover of California Dreaming is very effective at conveying the mood of the song.

The Noto + Sakamoto version of By This River strips out the vocals in favor of piano/synth nuance.

Boris and Ai Aso together cover two older songs (one each) and put a decidedly different spin on each, in the former case because Wata does the vocals.

All of Steven Wilson's Cover Versions are worth a listen and also pack one original song each.

The Puppini Sisters are a close-harmony singing group in the style of the Andrews Sisters. They have done covers of some 1940s songs, covers of more recent songs in a 1940s style, and some original songs.

Definitely two of their more unconventional covers are The Smith's Panic and Kate Bush's Wuthering Heights.

Bill Evans' heartbroken, abstract reading of "I Loves You Porgy" from "The Solo Sessions, Vol. 2" is the quintessential one for me.

In a totally different direction, I also love LSDudes's Speak-and-Spell run at Don't Stop Believing - an early 80s hit that sounds the way the early 80s actually felt.

Not sure whether any of these started out cliched, but they're all mindblowing:

- Romeo and Juliet - Dire Straights/The Killers
- Ben Gibbard of Death Cab did Avril Lavigne's Complicated on his solo tour. Reception was mixed. - - There are recordings floating around on the internet.
- Eve 6, back in the day when they were still a band, did a live cover of "I Touch Myself" by the Divinyls. It's pretty rad. Again, you'll find it floating around somewhere.
- The Man Who Sold the World - Bowie/Nirvana
- Summertime - Gershwin I think?/Muse. Also about this song: "The common opinion is that "Summertime" vies with the Beatles' "Yesterday" as one of the most popular cover songs in popular music, with an estimated 2,500 different versions recorded."
- Mad World - Tears for Fears/Gary Jules
- Across the Universe - The Beatles/Fiona Apple
- Across the Universe - The Beatles/Rufus Wainwright
- Sexual Healing - Marvin Gaye/Ben Harper. Another live cover.
- Brandon Boyd of Incubus did a cover of Alison by Elvis Costello for GAP. Don't know if it's still available, it was on some GAP CD.
- Scarlet Begonias - Grateful Dead/Sublime
- Wild Horses - The Rolling Stones/The Sundays

-The Slits' "I Heart It Through the Grapevine"
-Devo's "Satisfaction"...PJ Harvey and Bjork's. Cat Power's version is pretty good too.
-Speaking of, Cat Power early on was awesome at twisting songs and making them her own. "Still In Love", "Psychic Hearts", "Wonderwall", "I Found a Reason", "Bathysphere", "Red Apples", "Wild is the Wind", "Sea of Love", "Fate of the Human Carbine", "Yesterday is Here"
-Speaking of Tom Waits and "Sea of Love", his version is nice too.
-Peter Laughner and Friends' version of "The Calvary Cross"
-Sonic Youth's version of "Hotwire My Heart"
-Rebecca Gates' live version of "Talk of the Town" is lovely.
-Speaking of her/the Spinanes, Fluf's version of "Entire"
-Will Oldham/Bonnie "Prince" Billy's covered a bunch of songs by people like the Cranberries ("Dreaming My Dreams"), Bill Withers ("The Same Love that Made Me Laugh")...and often they're quite moving, live at least.
-Love it or hate it, Greg Dulli/Afghan Whigs/Twilight Singers has covered a ton of songs in pretty loving fashion. Personal favorites include "Hyperballad" (if you can find it the live KCRW version is way better/more moving), "Feeling of Gaze", "What Makes You Think You're the One" (so flipping good), "Ex Factor", "Real Love", "Little Red Corvette"
-Crooked Fingers' "The River" and "Sunday Morning Coming Down"
-Tori Amos' mocking version of "Hurt", like putting a pin prick in the balloon of Trent Reznor's ego...I also like her versions of "I Ran", "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", "Real Men", "Rattlesnakes", and "Strange Little Girl".
-Yo La Tengo's "You Can Have It All" and "By the Time It Gets Dark" (Mary Lou Lord's version is good too)
-Elliott Smith's "Waterloo Sunset"
-Not a cover per se, but Richard Buckner's musical adaptation of the poem "Elizabeth Childers" is one of my favorite songs ever
-Red House Painters' "Follow You, Follow Me", "All Mixed Up", "Albuquerque", "Silly Love Songs"
-Low's "Open Arms"
-Ryan Adam and Gillian Welch doing "Helpless"
-Spoon's "Me and the Bean"
-Built to Spill's Linus and Lucy theme
-Galaxie 500's "Listen, the Snow is Falling", "Ceremony", "Cheese and Onions"
-Xiu Xiu's version of (the admittedly already great) "All We Ever Wanted Was Everything", "Blueberry Mineshaft", etc.
-The Fall's "I'm a Mummy"
-I may get hanged for this, but I actually like Swans' version of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" despite not being a Jarbo fan. Dunno why (it's not really my sort of thing generally) but I do.
-Scud Mtn. Boys' "Wichita Lineman"

I would encourage you to look into more of the covers done by The Bad Plus. Smells Like Teen Spirit, Iron Man, Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb.

Suzanna and the Magical Orchestra

Stina Nordenstam: People are strange (album; her Purple Rain is particularly good, but I couldn't find a video of it...)

Me First and the Gimme Gimmes do this as an art form. Some of my favorites: Stand By Your Man, The Phantom of the Opera, Don't Cry For Me Argentina.

Shiny Toy Guns - Major Tom is a straight cover that is nonetheless awesome.

Lolita №18 has several, including Be My Baby.

Low IQ & Yukari Fresh - Anarchy in the UK will BLOW YOUR BRAINSTEM.

All of the Balanescu Quartet's covers of Kraftwerk on the album Posessed. Their stunning rendition of Computer Love is my favorite song of all time. BONUS: a gorgeous acoustic guitar version of the BQ's string quartet version of Kraftwerk's electronica.

TVTROPES WARNING: The Cover Changes the Meaning and Changes the Gender list some great ones.

And last but not least, the Dan Band's Total Fucking Eclipse of the Heart

The Jolly Boys' entire album "Great Expectation" is awesome, here are my favorites:
Rehab
You Can't Always Get What You Want
Perfect Day

Someone here once pointed me to this, and I love them for it. I don't thrill to the Beatles but oh my god, she has made this one of my favorite songs:
Aretha Franklin - Eleanor Rigby

for a groovy strange mood:
Ella Fitzgerald - Savoy Truffle
Robert Goulet - Green Tambourine

Nightwish's Phantom of the Opera. Their Over the Hills and Far Away is closer to the original.

Finland's Kuorosota competition, where well-known Finns act as choirmasters for various amateur choir groups, produces a variety of covers: Nightwish's bassist leads Bad Romance; Like a Virgin; I Was Made for Loving You; You Shook Me All Night Long, complete with gender switching.

Flying Nun's "Abbasalutely" album features New Zealand alternative bands doing Abba covers; for me the highlight was the Headless Chickens' Supertrouper, but the likes of Garageland's Dancing Queen are worth a listen.

Scala, a teenage girls' choir, doing The Divynls "I Touch Myself" is... well, it speaks for itself, really.

St. Vincent - Dig A Pony [Beatles] (alt version)

Ben Gibbard (Death Cab) - Thriller [Michael Jackson]

Jose Gonzalez: Frente - Bizarre Love Triangle [New Order]

Nouvelle Vague - Blue Monday [New Order]

Ted Leo: Calexico: Elliott Smith - Thirteen [Big Star] Warning: May make you cry.

You Ain't no Picasso put together an absolutely epic collection of covers that have been performed by Of Montreal. They've also done the same for St Vincent, Ted Leo, Fleet Foxes, Arcade Fire, The Decemberists, and Spoon.

The Onion's AV club have also curated a large number of indie rock covers over the past two years, almost all of which have been fantastic. [Last year and this year].

The undisputed highlight of that series was They Might Be Giants' cover of Chumbawamba's Tubthumping, which they did without actually really knowing the lyrics, while being accompanied by every single %*&ing person they could find and drag into the AV Club's tiny studio with them. It's every bit as great as it sounds.

Laibach's cover of the Beatles' whole Let it Be album. Their video for Across the Universe (which recasts the song as a sort of sweet but disturbing fascist hymn) is worth watching.

White Town's original is kick ass, but Darren Hayes's version is especially heartbreaking (and the gender issue less ambiguous).
