How to resurrect .Mac account

Can I transition a defunct mac.com account to iCloud?
Out of boredom and curiosity, I managed to reset an old mac.com account. Apple recognizes it as an AppleID, but I can't get it to work with MobileMe or iCloud. Ideas?

To set up an iCloud account from a Mac it needs to be running OSX 10.7.2.

MobileMe is now basically defunct.
Either your AppleID works or it doesn't. There are no in-betweens. You can reset it here.
To get iCloud to work you need to create an account. The Apple support page suggests that you need a device running iOS5 but it may be possible to do it from Lion without an iOS device. If you have the right hardware the process described on the page I linked to should work with any AppleID.
