Therapist specializing in abandonment issues in San Diego?

I recently realized that I need to talk to someone about my abandonment anxiety, because it distracts me from enjoying my relationships with other people. I'm pretty ok on a day-to-day basis, but as soon as I start really sharing myself with someone I really like, I am almost paralyzed by the fear of losing them. I become very negative and anxious and I have difficulty understanding my emotions well enough to set boundaries. Can one of you wise folks recommend someone?

"Abandonment" is not really a specialty, but that's good news. Pretty much all therapists are specialists of some kind in interpersonal relationships. As far as the type of therapy, there's a number of options and you may need to do some first-round interviews to find someone who's going to offer an approach that suits you.

A marriage and family therapist will be very familiar with relational/systems issues like abandonment and attachment, so that would be a good place to start. There is a neat California MFT finder website at http://www.counselingcalifornia.com
