Name that London restaurant.

Can you recommend a London restaurant that meets my specific needs?

Now that I've found a hotel for my trip to London, I need advice on a place to host a dinner, ideally in or near Shoreditch/Bethnal Green.

It will be a business dinner of sorts for around 7 people. The dinner will be pretty casual, but it is important that the restaurant is not so cramped or noisy that we can't have a proper conversation.

I would like to pay around 20 pounds a head including drinks, but if the right place cannot be found at that price, I am prepared to go higher - I really have no idea when it comes to London. It doesn't need to be a fancy place, but it should have a nice atmosphere: modern, light, trendy but not too trendy.

I don't know if any members of the group have dietary restrictions and I'm not really in a place to find out, so I would prefer a menu that tends towards classic rather than adventurous, with at least some vegetarian options.

If you can think of anything which meets these requirements, or could come close, then I would be very grateful!

I'd recommend Bacchus in Hoxton High Street. It has private rooms upstairs and says it can cater a 3-course meal for £20 a head (that doesn't include drinks though). I've eaten in the main bar/restaurant several times and the food has always been very good indeed.

I ate at the Cutler St. location of Haz on a recent trip and I'd describe the atmosphere as what you're looking for. I believe the prices are within your range as well, and it wasn't too loud to have a conversation. I'm not sure if Turkish food would be too adventurous for your group, but nothing is spicy or unusual, and there are plenty of really delicious meat and vegetarian options.

Cay Tre (between Old Street and Shoreditch) is a very decent Vietnamese restaurant. Not too pretentious, food v. nice. There or thereabouts on price.

In situations like these, toptable is your friend.

A quick search for Wednesday 23rd November (I'm guessing based on your last question) for £ rated restaurants in the Shoreditch area gives 26 restaurants of which Bottega Prelibato is rated the highest at 8.0. For Bethnal Green, you're looking at 30 venues of which Bombay Grill gets the highest at 8.0. For both areas, there are plenty of restaurants rated at 7.9 which look nice.

If you really want to hit the £20 per person including drinks then Bengal Cuisine looks to be a winner. Rated 7.9 and has an offer of 6 courses and a complimentary drink for £11.95 per person.

You need to join toptable (it's free) to get the offer.

Rivington Arms, Rivington Street. Modern British. Probably above the price range you give, but you may decide it's worth it. For a pub lunch, try The Approach, Approach Road, it's usually quiet during the week.
