Canonical works of Spanish-language literature

I'd like to broaden my reading in Spanish, and would like recommendations for books, originally written in Spanish, which are canonical enough to have been on Spanish or Latin American high school reading lists, or canonical enough that someone educated in Spain or Latin America might assume familiarity.

My reading level these days is probably that of a motivated-but-a-bit-slow teenager. I'm interested specifically in works of Spanish and Latin American literature, rather than other canonical works written in other languages that Spanish-speaking kids might have read (so Cervantes yes, Shakespeare and Orwell and Dostoevsky, no).

Best answer: This FPP would be a great place to start.
