IPod Confusion

How do I select or delete specific songs from my IPod?

I am producing a public event this Saturday and would like to use music from my IPod to help set the ambiance. I thought that I could delete the unnecessary stuff, keep stuff for the event and the resync after.

I went online to see how to delete. I found some information that I am unable to apply. Is there an easier way to do this.

Or....

Can I separate what I would like to play from that I do not without having to delete anything?

Best answer: Playlists made in iTunes?

Best answer: You take it off using the same program you used to put it on the iPod.

I think most people use iTunes. So, plug your iPod into your computer, open iTunes, and view the stuff on your iPod in iTunes.

Then select a song and press 'Delete' or right-click/option-click and remove the track.

As Freedomboy alludes, you can also use iTunes to make playlists that you can then put on your iPod and play whenever you want. If you choose this route, it won't be necessary to delete everything from your iPod that you don't want to play that night. I recommend the playlist route!

If your iPod is set up to the basic "sync everything in iTunes", then the easiest thing to do is select the "only sync checked songs" in the Music tab for your device in iTunes. Uncheck all your Poison and Bryan Adams.

If you ONLY have your iPod and no access to a computer, a laborious way of doing this is to make an "on the go" playlist. Navigate to a song you want and hold down the center button until it flashes. It will be placed in your on-the-go playlist. AFAIK you can't do this with whole albums; you have to do it song-by-song.

Best answer: Create a playlist. In itunes, throw everything you want into the playlist, then load the playlist onto your ipod. Just make sure you've got enough tunes in the playlist to last for the duration of the event. You could even put the songs within your playlist on shuffle. When you're finished, delete the single playlist from your ipod, and you'll have all your old tunes in place.

You can also make playlists using your iPod. I have an iPod Classic (Video) and this is how it works for me:

I highlight the track I want to add first to the playlist. You have to add the songs in order when you're building a playlist using the iPod interface, so make sure the first one you do is the one you want to play first.

Next I press-and-hold the button in the middle of the circle trackpad until a new menu appears.

One of the options on the menu is 'Add to On-The-Go Playlist' or somesuch, and so I highlight that one and press the middle circle button to select. The screen goes back to the song I selected and the highlighting around it flashes.

Do the same thing for all the songs you want on the playlist, in the order that you want them.

After you get to the last song, go back to your Playlists menu, highlight 'On-The-Go Playlist' (or somesuch) and press the middle circle button to select. You'll see the songs you selected, but at the top of the tracklist there are a few options, one of which is something to the effect of 'Save On-the-Go Playlist'.

Highlight and click that one, and you'll see the name of the playlist is changed to 'New Playlist 1' or something. Bingo!

Nope, you can do it at any level - it's how I make my 'spooky RPG session' music lists, navigate to 'artists', select 'Lustmord' and hold down the middle button...
