Why can't this be more simple?

(Long shot Ipad question): Need assistance if possible to put /find/extract data from an older ipad backup...

So here is the run down. Trying to locate some important files my boss had saved in the application notepad pro on his ipad2. I know this might be a long shot, and am familiar with how apple obscures and reduces access to files. What I am wondering is, anyway to get that data back on the device, extract it from some obscure database file, or anything?

The ipad in question had some reset done @ apple, and was told not to use the backup as it may have been corrupt. If the easiest way is to just reapply an old update and grab what I need, put the newest backup on. I would do that.

Thanks for your help, these i-devices are maddening.

iPhone Backup Extractor should do it. Get it here. All the files should be hiding in the folders there so you may need to poke around a bit after extracting the data. The directory names are fairly self explanatory.

What was wrong with the iPad in the first place?

Did you contact the makers of Notepad Pro? I get the sense from their website that English isn't their first language but they do have a support email address and phone number. They might be able to turn the backup back into PDFs or whatever format they store notes in.

You could also try iPhone Backup Browser (Windows) or JuicePhone (Mac) on (a copy of) the backed-up files.

Er, actually I used this one, I think. It's free.

If you can find the backup file on your computer, then you can try to restore the iPad with that. To find it, look in these following places:

* Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
* Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
* Windows Vista and Windows 7: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\

Backup files are overwritten when a device of the same type and name are backed up.

Response by poster: Thank you guys so much for the responses. I will be diving into those options.

Any other suggestions are welcome!

If you can find a backup with likely good data on it, you can restore the iPad from that backup (right click, restore from backup), then open up the app on the iPad and export the good data. Take note, however to change the name of the iPad and back it up before restoring from an old backup.
