Green craters?

Where was the very last scene of "Space Battleship Yamato" filmed?

The very last scene of that movie (avoiding spoilers here) shows a woman and a boy on a ridge. It seems to be shot from a helicopter, and the chopper moves around, revealing a couple of big craters. Within the context of the film they're supposed to be impact craters.

The area (including the craters) is all green but the greenery is only a few inches tall. There are no trees or bushes, and it doesn't even look like grass.

I considered the possibility that it was CGI, but it looks too realistic. (And the people do, too.) Anyone know whether it's real, and if so where that was filmed?

About 80% of the movie was shot on green screen, so I wouldn't discount the possibility that the scene is, in fact, CGI.

I just took a look, and I would bet that it was shot around Mount Aso in Kumamoto. Here are the Google Image results for "Mount Aso", and while I can't find anything that is an exact match of the images at the end of the movie, the landscape looks pretty similar.
