Get me out of Sydney so I can get some work done

Sydneyfilter: I have a lot of written work to get done and I'd like to take a short break from Sydney to do it. I imagine writing in a quiet room with a view of nature, perhaps taking occasional breaks to stroll in a garden, through the bush or along a beach. Where can I stay that's relatively affordable (under $100 a night), accessible without a car, and no more than four hours from Sydney?
Four hours on public transport north is about Port Stephens (~3hr train to Newcastle + 1 hr bus), or Jervis Bay in the South (~3hr train to Berry/Nowra + 1 hr bus). These are two of my favourite places! Going west you could get further - maybe all the way to Bathurst.
There are some excellent holiday rental websites like Stayz where you can put in the dates you want to go and your price limit and it will give you a lot of options.

How about Brooklyn, on the Hawkesbury River? or even Dangar Island(Just opposite Brooklyn, but you need to take a ferry). You can reach brooklyn by rail.

Seconding Port Stephens and Jervis Bay. Both are fantastic places, with a range of accommodation options.

Blue Mountains. Easily accessible by train from Sydney, a beautiful part of the world, and a range of accommodation for less than $100 a night.
I'd recommend my lovely hometown of Mudgee, but it's about 5 hours from Sydney by public transport (train from Central to Lithgow and a bus from there on). But we have lots of b'n'b's, and a few less expensive motels within walking distance of some beautiful scenery.

I'd be thinking some of the cute little towns on the railway between Sydney & Wollongong, eg Stanwell Park (or Tops) or Coalcliff.
Here's one that's *just* outside your price range, but during October only $790 for 7 nights.

Warning: backpacker hostels have skewered the results, but there do appear to be a few B&Bs and bungalows in the mountains and the like. The "accessible without a car" I can't help you with though I'm afraid, it would depend on what transport services are available.
