What is this car that Jack Nicholson drives in The Passenger?

Response by poster: Spoke too soon. I took a second look. One very distinctive feature of the car is the rounded front hinge of the front door. Do any Ford Fairlines have that?

I'd like to say I knew this on my own, but the Internet Movie Cars Database ID's it as a '66 Mercury Comet (which would explain the similarity to the Ford)

oh damnitall. i did a ton old fashioned GIS research and was "pretty sure" but not confident enough to come back and say it was a mid 60's comet. 25 minutes down the toilet... but ya, seconding the comet.

Chasles - if it's any consolation, I spent about 20 minutes doing the same (the rear looked vaguely Chevy Malibu-ish to me) before remembering there was, in fact, a internet database of movie cars.
