Help identify this (possibly) black and white NES (or SNES or Genesis) video game!

Asking for a friend: So this game was a first-person space shooter. I remember it being in black and white. There was a nice star field effect behind the title screen. An enemy space ship would approach, and we'd shoot at it until it was destroyed. I recall this taking a long time, and the enemy would never shoot back. I also remember, perhaps, a letter of the alphabet incrementing each time you destroyed an enemy ship. We were way too young to understand the point of all this. It seemed incredibly boring, so I assume we were missing something.

He is almost certain that this was a NES game, but it could have possibly been a SNES or (even less likely) Sega Genesis game.

Was the game in black and white or were you (or your friend) playing on a black and white TV?

Sounds like Elite for the NES. This video has some gameplay starting at about the 1 minute mark

If not Elite, then maybe Star Voyager?

Destination Earthstar?

Adventures in the Magic Kingdom's "Space Mountain" section?

The only one I'm familiar with is Star Voyager, and that was my first guess. I really really hated that game, and wondered too if I was missing something.

Some of it fits the description, I don't recall any letters, but the video clip linked by eviscaratordeath reminded me of that "coordinate" system, with the letters on the horizontal axis and numbers on the vertical. That might've been what you were thinking of. I kinda hope that's it, just so something remotely amusing will have come out of that game.
