No Standby Option on Laptop

I've just reformatted and reinstalled Windows XP (SP2) on a laptop. When I go to turn it off, the "standby" button is greyed out and not an option I can click on. What's going on, and how do I get my laptop to standby mode?

I've played with the powersaver settings in Ctrl Panel, and have set the setting to "Laptop" mode. (thanks in advance.)

Go into device manager and make sure the 'computer' entry says ACPI compliant pc.

And, you might have to download power management drivers from the hardware maker.

Installing the MoBo driver package will usually clear this up, as well, as they include power management drivers.
