You need to understand anchor links, which is really easy. For instance if you want to link to Google. You type:

[a href="http://www.google.com"]Google[/a] Just replace the [ and ] with a < and a>.

There's no way around it, you'll just need to learn to embrace the code thingies. After a while, writing in HTML just ^be_comes second nature. Showoff! Just be glad you're doing it in 2005 when the browsers have matured -- it was a real mess in the early-mid 90's.

Also, you could look into getting a web browser that supports Metafilter's LINK button. I believe Firefox does this but I'm not positive if it's across all platforms.

I have the links, but find that writing the html is just as quick since I don't have to switch between keyboard and mouse as much. After a while, typing <a href=" becomes as natural as typing your name.

What browser are you using? When I look at the comment box in Explorer, I see three small icons in the bottom right corner, for bold, italics, and links. That should be all you need.

I am using Safari-from a bit of research on MEFI it seems like it is not the best browser--i have not seen any of the said icons. Darn it! I don't want my MAC to fail in any way!

All caps is shrill, all lowercase is lazy. Also, an all caps word within a normally cased sentence usually indicates an acronym--you know, like NATO, or HTML, or MILF.

O for christ's sake all you smartypants out there. I will try again.

you can get firefox here. however, i don't know if the mac version will be able to display the link "icon" when you look at the site. your best bet is to download it and try (or just learn the < ... > tags - they're pretty simple and come in useful in other places, since it's just standard html, which is the way any basic web page is made).

and, personally, i ignore people who complain about where you should put caps ;o)

Just tried this site in Camino 0.8.4, and the three buttons appear for bold, italics and links. Camino is, IIRC, Mac only.

The Mac version of Firefox will display B/I/link buttons.

Yes, that's the point of Camino. It uses the same rendering engine as Firefox, but it's written in Carbon so it's much more Mac-like. There's almost no reason to use Firefox on a Mac.

While having Safari open up a bunch of tabbed pages, I use Firefox to load single pages to kill the wait. Firefox loads them right up instead of having them added to the tail-end of the Safari queue.

Also, Firefox has the useful plugins and I like it's as-you-type-search better than Safari's normal search (although I'd like it if Firefox's search-bar faded-away after say 60 seconds of no-use). Right now I use both. Although if there was/is a quick way to import my Safari bookmarks I'd probably use Firefox 99% of the time.
