Looking for a move...

Looking for a movie, and I can't remember what it is.

Details that I remember:

1. Takes place in a rural place, likely on a farm. Ireland, perhaps?
2. Man falls in love with a woman. I think there is a class distinction (perhaps she is a servant within the house?) There is a romance and they decide to run off together.
3. For some reason, the man doesn't show. He gets cold feet? He leaves town instead.
4. Many years in the future, he returns. He tries to find the woman, and finds out that she has died.
5. The end of the show has him riding out of town, and as he leaves, he sees a grown boy/man standing by the side of the road, and he knows that it is his son. The implication is that he never knew that the woman was pregnant.

Movie ends here. Sound familiar? From what I recall, it was probably released in the 80's.

Thanks for any help!

Don't know the film, but you might strike gold by looking through the TVTropes film examples for New Child Left Behind, Glorified Sperm Donor, and Luke, You Are My Father. Good luck!

Could it be Possession, based on the AS Byatt novel?

Response by poster: No, not Posession. Thanks for the idea though.

It took place, if I recall correctly, during the early 1900's. When the man was riding out of town, I believe it was on the back of a hay wagon or truck. Or at least in an older sort of vehicle.

Might it have been This Is My Father?

Response by poster: Not it, but closer.

I'm not sure if this makes sense, but the coloring/tone reminded me of things that were produced for the the BBC in the 80's, although I didn't recall it being a British movie.

It dawns on me that it could have been a made for TV movie (I saw it originally on TV), but the production values struck me as something that likely had an earlier theater release, although probably not for a long run.

Response by poster: Okay, I found the movie. In my last post, when I realized that it reminded me of a British movie, I did a search then for "British movies from the 1980's." It lead me to this list from wikipedia, and in 1988, it listed A Summer Story, and that was it. Here's a trailer clip, if anyone is interested.

Some of the details were a little bit off above. It took place in England in 1922 in a small village/town, and the man was passing through. She was a country girl, he was a lawyer.

I highly recommend it! It has a great ending (sorry I kind of gave it away above). But it still plays out quite well, and worth watching.
