drink up, buttercup

I need a powerful summer cocktail for this dainty pitcher set.

The glasses only hold 1/3 cup of liquid comfortably, so the ideal cocktail would be sipped, not chugged. Preferably with the pinky finger extended. Cheers!

Pinky finger up = Pimm's Cup.

I think needs and elderflower liquor and champagne cocktail. Flower garnish.

A Tom Collins. Bonus is that is won't affect the color of the pitcher and glasses.

If we were best friends, you would just fill that pitcher with Jagermeister and keep my dainty cup full.

Aside from that, I am thinking Sangria, Tennessee Lemonade or good ol' margaritas.

Caipirinha, and consider the question resolved.

... white sangria to avoid color change (as oneirodynia pointed out)

(however, you could have shown me a photo of anything from a bucket to a hollowed out broom handle and I've have given the same answer)

Along the lines of Pimm's Cup: Porch Swing FTW.

Hendricks, basil muddled in simple syrup, lime, splash of club soda.

Alternatively, Hendricks, St. Germaine, garnished with olives and cucumber slices.

You are welcome.

I'm rather fond of iced tea and lemonade with limoncello.

My personal recipe goes a little something like :
1 part iced tea, made with orange pekoe bags and Tazo Passion Tea bags
1 part lemonade
honey to taste
limoncello to desired level of intoxication

Tanqueray gin and watermelon run through a juicer. It's been years since I officially 'retired' from the booze, but in all honesty I do miss this thing we used to do on hot summer days. Lovely soft colour too.

Nice Blendo set! I'll nth the Caipirihna and Pimm's Cup, and also suggest making a pitcher full of the Beach Bum Berry Mai Tai's

Mint Julep!

Most of the pitcher-sized recipes I found involve making your own simple syrup rather than muddling the mint leaves with sugar. That sounds hard.

If my grandmother were here, she would tell you to toss some mint leaves down in the bottom of the glass with a pile of sugar, wet them a little, muddle them up good, cover them with ice, fill your glass with bourbon, and then settle in on the porch swing.

Here are a few different by-the-glass julep recipes, with one easy no-cook pitcher-sized permutation.

Response by poster: These are inspired. I think the glasses are too tiny for any sort of floating fruit. Even ice is pushing it.

Best answer: Pimm's Cups, collinses , porch swings and the like are best served tall over lots of ice, which your glasses won't work for. I'd go with the classic daiquiri. Not the sticky, gross, teenage girl fruity / frozen drink, but the classic cocktail (whic I've been drinking a ot of this summer):

There are lots of recipes, of course, but the formula I tend to go with is:
2 oz.light rum
1 oz. FRESH lime juice (approximately the juice of 1 smallish lime)
1 tsp powdered sugar or 1.5 tsp simple syrup

shake or stir (if using powdered sugar, you must shake or it's unlikely to dissolve well), serve up or on the rocks, garnished (if you want) with a slice of lime.

To scale up to suit your pitcher (assuming it holds about a pint, which is what it looks like) you want:

1 cup light rum
1/2 cup lime juice (4-5 limes)
2 tablespoons (1 oz.) simple syrup

Add ice and stir.

2 c bourbon (I like Dickle's)
6 c lemonade
1/3 c triple sec
Juice of half a lemon.

That's the knockout strength; you will want to adjust the lemonade up according to taste.

Oh, and if you don't feel like making simple syrup (which is actually pretty easy and keeps for quite awhile) you can generally buy it by the bottle in the mixers section of liquor stores.

Moving down the tree, Dad's favorite summer cocktail is the Bay Breeze (or Malibu Bay Breeze): equal parts pineapple juice and cranberry juice, with vodka (or coconut rum) in your preferred proportion. Involves no floating fruit, is delicious.

The following is a margarita recipe that has claimed many victims, even once warned:

The Mas y Mas Margarita

2 parts Jose Cuervo "Traditional Reposado" tequila
1/2 part Gran Torres Orange Liqueur
2 1/2 parts lime (see step 1 below)
Sea Salt (optional)

1. For the lime, you can simply use unadulterated fresh-squeezed lime juice. However, because Chicago is not exactly in the sun belt, you may need to sweeten your lime juice, as some restaurants do. I use a mixture which is 2 parts fresh-squeezed lime juice and 1 part simple sugar syrup. To make the simple sugar syrup, just mix a cup of sugar with a cup of boiling water and stir until dissolved.

2 If using the salt, rub a wedge of lime around the rim of a chilled glass and then dip in salt.

3. Mix all ingredients in a martini shaker with ice.

4. Shake and pour.

5. Repeat.

There was a great drink we used to make called Lemon Todd's - vodka, lemonade, and a big slug of kirsch (or other berry based brandy/schnapps.) Deeelicious!

A quick google turns up that a restaurant nearby does a version with a Thyme Simple Syrup which sounds dead on, and dead on easy to replicate. From their menu of Summer Punch Carafes:

"Country Thyme Lemonade

Thyme infused simple syrup, lemonade, vodka and kirsch cherries. Perfect for sipping on our porch!"

Boozy sangria: 3L wine, 375mL brandy, 2 oranges, 2 lemons, 2 limes. Soak overnight. The next day, top up with 1L 7-up or Sprite.
(proportions are approximate).
